Every group desires one. Not many people own one. At the beginning of every game, thirty-two players offer their best possibilities; within that group, there are several significant differences to consider.
When we created the initial iteration of the No. 1 Center Tiers, we intended to categorize the top players on each team’s depth chart based on those differences.
EDMONTON — Head coach Martin St. Louis was not there when the Montreal Canadiens took to the ice on Monday for practice due to a family matter, but there was a noticeable difference in the atmosphere throughout the skate.
It was not that different, though. Trevor Letowski, the assistant coach, works closely with St. Louis throughout the season. They are completely compatible, and Letowski stated that he still communicates with St. Louis “multiple times a day.” Even in the absence of actual presence, there is unquestionably involvement.
After an hour-long practice, Letowski stated, “We feel we’re playing pretty sound hockey over the last little while. We’ve taken a long time to try and build it up.” Perhaps the data doesn’t support that.
Slafkovský made great progress, going from 10 points in 39 games as a rookie to 14 goals and 36 points as a sophomore. The nicest thing about his breakthrough, though, is that he looks much better than his higher score totals suggest.
Even in the early part of the season when the output wasn’t there, the 2022 No. 1 pick was obviously improving. Now that he’s played 36 games and scored 12 goals and 28 points while playing a top-line role alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, it’s all starting to come together. Slafkovský is becoming adept at using his enormous size and reach, but what has amazed me most is his ability to create plays that flow from east to west.
