A 70-year-old man is accused of killing a Hueytown youngster in a hit-and-run.

Additionally, Fairfield resident Walter Lee Ellison faces charges of DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident that causes harm or death. The victim of the Tuesday crash was Gabriel Demor Edwards, an 18-year-old.

On Wednesday, Hueytown police provided more information on Edwards’ passing and the circumstances surrounding Ellison’s charges.

According to Lt. Michael Shupe, a patrol officer saw a car traveling on the wrong side of the road around 12:08 a.m. on Tuesday, close to the intersection of Allison Bonnett Memorial Drive and Brooklane Drive.

Ellison was driving a Ford F-150 when the police stopped it.

Ellison was arrested for driving under the influence and lodged at the Hueytown City Jail.

Officers observed that Ellison’s car had recently sustained front-end damage. They looked about, but they couldn’t discover anything that matched the damage.

Officers then went to a report of a person down close to the intersection of Hueytown Road and Walker Avenue at 6:15 a.m. Edwards was discovered dead at that time, not far off the road.

According to Shupe, the officers noticed a lot of car components lying around Edwards right away.

According to the evidence, Edwards was hit by a car that was also heading north on Hueytown Road while he was strolling north.

Information about the harm to the earlier DUI arrest was shared by officers from the prior shift.

Ellison’s prior DUI arrest’s green Ford F-150 was matched to evidence found at the scene. According to other evidence, Edwards was hit at 11:30 p.m., or approximately half an hour before Ellison was taken into custody.

Ellison is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail while he awaits transfer.
