Early on Wednesday, word leaked out that the Buffalo Bills had sold wide receiver Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 second-round selection.
We are aware that the mysterious star pass-catcher and his now-former team had a contentious relationship. We continued to believe that the Super Bowl contender would not be able to trade their best weapon for franchise quarterback Josh Allen. Unfortunately, that occurred on Wednesday morning.
When discussing the deal, general manager of the Bills Brandon Beane remarked that Allen most likely heard the news of the move when he woke up on the west coast. It appears Buffalo failed to inform its expensive quarterback of a trade that transferred his top target to a rival AFC team.
There’s an on-field dynamic at work here, in addition to the organization and its star signal caller not communicating with each other.
During his four years in Buffalo, Diggs, 30, averaged 111 receptions for 1,343 yards after being acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in a blockbuster trade prior to the 2020 season. In Western New York, he was by far Allen’s favorite target.
Diggs’ exit occurs after the Bills lost Gabe Davis, their second-best wide receiver, to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the NFL free agency period.
The top three wide receivers the Bills are currently projecting to be are Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, and Justin Shorter. Being in this circumstance is not ideal.
Later this month, in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Buffalo is expected to choose a wide receiver. The group might also explore making a trade for Tee Higgins or Brandon Aiyuk.
