Bills general manager committed a “Stupid” error by selecting quarterback Josh Allen

The Buffalo Bills are usually competitive when quarterback Josh Allen is leading the team. But according to Bills general manager Brandon Beane, Allen may have had greater success in his early career had it not been for his “stupid” error.

Analyst Robert Mays questioned Beane on “The Athletic Football Show” on what he would change from his previous seven years in Buffalo. When Beane selected Allen with the seventh overall choice in the 2018 draft, he noted that his biggest regret was what he chose not to do.

“When those teams drafted a rookie quarterback, I didn’t have someone here with the right experience, a veteran for Josh to lean on. That was one of the first lessons I learned that I screwed up,” Beane remarked.

Josh was having some early difficulties and going through his thing, and I realized that it was foolish of me to not have taken action. However, about week five or six, I brought Derek Anderson in. And I ought to have had that earlier.

“I had known D.A.” Beane went on. “He accomplished so much for Cam [Newton]… We were considering giving some young men a shot. Actually, though, we invested everything we had in Josh Allen. I became overly adorable. That was the first time I really called myself a “dumbass.”

In Week 2 of the 2018 NFL season, Allen beat out Nathan Peterman to start. The former Wyoming player completed 169 of 320 passes for 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 12 games with 11 starts.

Beane regretted, “I think it would have helped Josh more his rookie year.” “I made a stupid mistake early on.”

Joe Brady, the Bills’ offensive coordinator said, “Josh Allen is the Offender Here.”
This year, there has been a lot of turnover in the receivers room, most notably with the departure of Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs, but Joe Brady, the offensive coordinator for the Bills, isn’t too concerned. Why? due to the fact that Allen is a superstar dual threat.

Brady told reporters on Tuesday, May 28, that Josh Allen is ultimately responsible for this offense. It’s a quarterback-driven league, so the offense will still center around him. We’re lucky to still have him. We’ll need to adapt and gauge how opposing teams are handling us. Even after only a few days, we already have a great group.

Brady is still evaluating the newcomers and determining their areas of strength. However, Allen’s skill will ultimately dictate how the offense is designed.

We would look into anything that seems like it could be simpler for the guys to learn from a learning perspective. Other than that, he stated, “[We] are not changing that if it was something that was going to slow 17 down.”

Bills News: Josh Allen, the quarterback, will be surrounded by a committee of wide receivers in Buffalo.

Who will take Diggs’ spot as Allen’s top target in the offseason is one of the most important concerns. Keon Coleman, Mack Hollins, Khalil Shakir, and Curtis Samuel are among the top receivers for the Bills. Chase Claypool and former Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling were also signed by Buffalo.

In 2024, tight end Dalton Kincaid is expected to see a lot of targets after having a strong first season. Brady emphasized the committee method on Tuesday, even though Beane had hinted at it shortly after trading Diggs.

“Everyone is going to eat in this offense,” he declared.

Brady went on, “You don’t just sit there and say you’re going to replace a player or a scheme or targets.” “Every year will be unique, but the most important thing is, in my opinion, to realize as the season is about to begin, ‘Well, what do these wide receivers do well? And let’s figure out how to assign them to those roles.
