French Open Scare Survives For Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz will next compete for a spot in the round of sixteen against either South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo or American Sebastian Korda, the 27th seed.

World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the third round on Wednesday after overcoming a major scare from 176th-ranked Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong in four sets. Alcaraz, the Wimbledon winner and last year’s Roland Garros semifinalist, battled through a player competing in his second Grand Slam main draw match to win 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the second round. Before De Jong, in his fifth match of the competition, finally withered under the roof of Court Phillipe Chatrier, the 21-year-old Spaniard was broken five times and committed 47 unforced errors.

Alcaraz added, “Any player can cause you trouble.”

“It doesn’t matter what your rating is; you have to play at your best and maintain focus throughout every round. Jesper is capable of cracking the top 100 with his work and level.”

Alcaraz will next compete for a spot in the round of 16 against either South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo or American Sebastian Korda, the 27th seed.

Alcaraz broke three times to take the lead even though he was broken in the opening set’s second game.

Then, during the second set, the tenacious Dutchman saved eight break points until the Spaniard delivered the game-winning stroke.

Alcaraz, who missed the Rome Open due to a right arm issue, entered the competition with an injury cloud, but in the third set, he lost his game.

The Dutchman made five unforced errors, while he made fifteen, allowing the qualifier to close the gap.
