Scottie Scheffler breaks what many considered ‘unbreakable’ Tiger Woods record

Scottie Scheffler’s victory at the Travelers Championship has caused him to break what many considered to be Tiger Woods’ “unbreakable” record.

Last week, Scheffler, who turned 28 years old, won his sixth PGA Tour championship in his previous ten tries.

On the first extra hole, he clinched the victory with a two-putt par from 15 feet after Tom Kim’s ball got stuck in the greenside bunker and made a bogey.

After winning his 12th career PGA Tour championship and taking home a cool $3.6 million, Scheffler added 66 more points to his Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) total, solidifying his place atop the world rankings.

With his most recent points, Scheffler has now surpassed Woods’ all-time record of 532 points through the first half of the season, which he established in 2000—a season in which he went on to win nine times.

As of today, Scheffler has accumulated 583 points in 2024’s first half.

The news was shared by OWGR expert Nosferatu on X and Twitter.

Nosferatu tweeted:

Scottie Scheffler absolutely smashed what seemed to be one of the most unbreakable #OWGR Tiger Woods records dating since his famous 2000 season!

Most OWGR points earned by a player in the first 6 months of a year:

1. Scottie 2024: ~583p
2. Tiger 2000: ~532p

Scheffler has won just about $30 million in prize money on the PGA Tour alone in just six events this season.

By the time he broke the record with nine victories in a season in 2000 (the US Open, US PGA, WGC-NEC Invitational, Mercedes Championship, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Bay Hill Invitational, Memorial Tournament, and US Open), Woods had only won five championships at this point.

If Scheffler wants to equal Woods’ nine-record season—which Vijay Singh also accomplished in 2004—he will have to maintain a high gear.

Scheffler still has to participate in at least five PGA Tour events, according to a deeper look at his remaining schedule: the Scottish Open, The Open, FedEx St Jude Championship, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship (the FedEx Cup finale).

In August, he will participate in the Olympic Golf Tournament in Paris, and in September, he will be a member of the US Presidents Cup team.

With six season victories, Scheffler now shares the record with Nick Price (1994) and Tiger Woods (2005, 2009).

In addition, Woods has three seasons with seven or more wins: seven in 2007; eight in 1999 and 2006; and nine in 2000.

Nine wins in a season on the PGA Tour is a record shared with Vijay Singh (2004).

YEAR GOLFER OVERALL WINS MAJOR WINS
2004 Vijay Singh 9 1
2000 Tiger Woods 9 3
2006 Tiger Woods 8 2
1999 Tiger Woods 8 1
2007 Tiger Woods 7 1
2009 Tiger Woods 6 0
2005 Tiger Woods 6 2
1994 Nick Price 6 2
2024 Scottie Scheffler 6 1
