Analyzing Ken Dorsey’s Innovative RPO Play
In 2024, the Cleveland Browns enlisted Ken Dorsey, a former quarterback and offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, to revamp and streamline their offensive strategy. Dorsey is renowned for his ability to create efficient and effective schemes while maintaining simplicity.
Dorsey excels at devising methods to ease the workload for quarterbacks and the entire offense. A popular approach in the NFL is integrating Run-Pass Option (RPO) variations into the playbook.
Incorporating RPOs into an existing offensive system is relatively straightforward. Coaches can add a basic RPO element to an outside-zone play by reading defenders post-snap and making passing decisions based on their movements.
A prime example of this approach is demonstrated in a play from the 2023 season

Josh Allen “keys” the MIKE on this one. If he steps up or flows inside, he hits the WR that drifts into the space vacated by the MIKE.

The Buffalo offense uses a compact formation to create the illusion of a running play. When the play begins, quarterback Josh Allen observes the MIKE linebacker and decides his next move based on the MIKE’s reaction.
If the MIKE moves inward or steps forward to counter the run, Allen keeps the ball and passes it to the receiver who moves into the area left open by the MIKE. Conversely, if the MIKE shifts outward or retreats, Allen hands off the ball to the running back. This straightforward yet effective RPO (Run-Pass Option) strategy forces the defense to misalign themselves.
In 2023, Ken Dorsey and the Bills heavily utilized their RPO package, and it’s expected that Dorsey will introduce similar strategies in Cleveland this summer. The Browns’ offense has been missing this element in recent seasons.
