James Jones expressed satisfaction with the Suns’ selections in the first round of the draft.

The Phoenix Suns had an exceptionally promising start to the 2024 NBA Draft’s first round.

Following a strategic trade with the Nuggets, the Suns effectively moved down six spots and secured Virginia forward Ryan Dunn with the 28th overall pick. This maneuver also granted Phoenix the 56th pick in this year’s draft, along with future second-round selections in 2026 and 2031 from Denver.

James Jones, Suns’ general manager and president of basketball operations, expressed satisfaction with their draft night outcomes, stating, “Tonight was a good night for us.” He emphasized achieving their goals of selecting Dunn while acquiring additional assets to bolster future team-building efforts.

Dunn, a standout 6-foot-6 forward renowned for his defensive prowess, fulfilled Phoenix’s objectives of enhancing athleticism, defensive size on the perimeter, and injecting youth into the roster. In his sophomore season at Virginia, Dunn led the ACC with 2.3 blocks per game and garnered ACC All-Defensive Team honors, alongside averaging 8.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and demonstrating solid shooting percentages.

However, Dunn’s shooting percentages, with only 20% from beyond the arc and 53.2% from the free-throw line, reveal significant room for improvement in his scoring abilities. Jones remains optimistic about Phoenix’s potential to enhance this aspect of Dunn’s game.

“At Virginia, his focus was primarily on defense, leveraging his athleticism,” Jones noted. “While his shooting hasn’t met his or our expectations yet, we believe he has the potential to develop significantly over the coming years. Despite his current shooting stats, he’s a player who makes a real impact on the game, not just in scoring.”

“With our dedicated coaching staff, led by new coach Mike Budenholzer, I’m confident Dunn will make strides in his shooting. If he can refine his shot quickly, I believe we’ve uncovered a true talent.

A promising, 6-foot-6 wing boasting an impressive 7-foot-1.5 wingspan capable of defending across all positions from 1 to 5 is precisely the kind of player you need alongside stars such as Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Addressing the rumors surrounding Durant, Jones affirmed that he remains a fixture on the team and isn’t being considered for a trade anytime soon.

Dunn expressed a strong desire to join Phoenix, a sentiment that Jones believes aligns perfectly with the team’s dynamics.

“After speaking with (Dunn) following the draft, he expressed his enthusiasm about joining us here in Phoenix,” Jones revealed. “He’s eager to get started and has shown a strong desire to be a part of our team. During the draft process, we had a chance to connect for about half an hour. We discussed his journey as a player and what he believes he needs to excel at this level.

“He’s known for his relentless work ethic, a trait that both his coaches and opponents acknowledge. I’m confident that with our team, coaching staff, and the environment we provide, he’ll thrive. What stood out most was his determination to become an elite defender, which is something we value tremendously and believe will greatly benefit our team.”

“The Phoenix Suns have set their sights on Kris Dunn to bolster their defensive prowess. General Manager Jones articulated their vision: ‘Our aim is to acquire an elite, shutdown defender who can consistently challenge and disrupt the opposing team’s top scorer.’ This strategic move underscores their commitment to defensive excellence in the upcoming NBA season.

The second round of the 2024 NBA Draft kicks off tomorrow at 1 p.m. MST.”
