Celtics champion approaches prison with a distinctive perspective

Glen “Big Baby” Davis was a member of the Boston Celtics championship team in 2008 alongside Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen.

As a rookie, the 6-foot-9, 289-pound power forward played in 69 games during the season when the Celtics won their 17th championship, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals.

Davis had an eight-season career in the NBA, with four seasons spent with the Celtics. However, he is now facing a 40-month prison sentence for his involvement in a scheme to defraud the NBA’s Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan, allegedly receiving payments for medical treatments he never received. Despite the impending sentence, Davis has expressed a lack of nervousness about going to prison, even suggesting he hopes to make the most of his time there.

Expected to begin his prison term in early August pending any appeal delays, Davis remains optimistic about his appeal but is mentally preparing for whatever comes next. He stated he is taking each day as it comes and intends to approach his time in prison positively, aiming to learn and meet new people.

Davis humorously mentioned that prison might help him get back into shape and joked about potentially attracting attention from women while incarcerated. He also noted that his stature and celebrity status might make him a topic of interest among fellow inmates, although he doesn’t anticipate any issues during his stay.

Despite the circumstances, Davis reflected on his NBA career, which included stints with the Celtics, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers after being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007. His time with the Celtics saw him average 7.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game over four seasons before being traded in December 2011.
