Thought to be the front-runner to sign former $100 million wide receiver

The Dallas Cowboys are currently favored to sign a former standout wide receiver, according to betting odds.

BetOnline lists the Cowboys as the frontrunners to acquire Michael Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowl receiver, at +300 odds, excluding his former team, the New Orleans Saints.

During his prime, Thomas was statistically one of the NFL’s top receivers, setting a record for 149 receptions in the 2019 season while playing alongside former Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees. That year, he also led the league with 1,725 receiving yards and earned Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Following a lucrative contract extension worth $100 million over five years, with $61 million guaranteed, Thomas’ career trajectory was marred by injuries. He played only seven games in 2020 due to ankle issues, recording 40 receptions for 438 yards and no touchdowns. His subsequent seasons were similarly affected, missing the entire 2021 season due to an ankle injury and significant time in 2022 and 2023 due to foot and knee injuries, respectively.

Despite his recent injury setbacks, the Cowboys could benefit from Thomas’ potential contribution as a secondary receiver. In his most recent healthy season, he amassed 39 receptions for 448 yards in 10 games, showcasing his value even in a reduced role.

Speculation about Thomas joining the Cowboys intensified when Bleacher Report highlighted him as a potential replacement for Michael Gallup, who departed in the offseason. The article suggests Thomas could bolster the team’s receiving corps, particularly as the third option behind CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, possibly fourth with tight end Jake Ferguson’s role factored in.

The Cowboys’ interest in Thomas hinges on securing him at a reasonable cost, potentially on a short-term deal with incentives given his recent injury history. Such a move could provide Dallas with an experienced upgrade over current options like Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, and rookie Ryan Flournoy.

Ultimately, whether the Cowboys pursue Thomas remains to be seen, but his potential addition could offer substantial upside amid their offseason strategy of fiscal restraint and strategic roster building.
