Former Cowboys starter may sign a free agent contract with the Eagles

In 2024, the Dallas Cowboys let go of a few veterans, and one of those players could end up becoming a late addition to the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Jayron Kearse established himself as the starting safety for the Cowboys, he has been a free agency since the conclusion of the previous campaign.

Columnist Patrick McAvoy of SI.com thinks he and the Eagles may work well together. McAvoy gave an explanation of Kearse’s rationale as a free agent signing by the Philadelphia Phillies on July 16.

“Kearse wouldn’t be a costly option, and the Eagles could definitely afford him.” The Eagles have stated that they wish to try out James Bradberry at safety, so they might not want to make a big statement, according to McAvoy. “Kearse could be a good fit for the Eagles’ depth needs; they still have plenty of cap space to work with.”
It’s an intriguing concept and undoubtedly a move that would have a big impact on Dallas. Kearse is being let go by the Cowboys for a reason, but it would not be ideal to see him twice a year.Kearse is well-versed on both the Cowboys and the NFC East, even though Mike Zimmer is the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Three Years Are Spent in Dallas by Kearse
Kearse joined the Cowboys at a critical juncture in his career, having spent five years and just twelve career starts with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. Dallas gave the former Clemson Tiger the chance to establish himself as a consistent starter, something he had never done before.

Kearse fulfilled the opportunity in numerous ways. The 30-year-old recorded career highs in interceptions (2,), passes defended (10,), and tackles for loss (9), according to Pro Football Reference.
Kearse was signed by the Cowboys to a one-year, $1.2 million contract, and it was an instant success for both parties. The next offseason, Dallas re-signed Kearse for a two-year contract, giving him $10 million in total, according to Spotrac.

Although Kearse didn’t achieve those same stats in 2022 and 2023, he did record at least one interception and four passes defensed. With Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker playing well, it makes obvious that Dallas has moved on, but it’s a little odd that Kearse hasn’t been able to sign with another team.

seasoned Cowboys defender might not make the 53-man roster
Cowboys LB Damien Wilson may be joining Kearse on the open market while he remains a free agent. Wilson was mentioned by Cowboys Wire reporter K.D. Drummond as a possible cut candidate following his small 2023 role.

According to Drummond, Wilson was a first-round pick of the Cowboys who went on to win a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs after finding fame elsewhere. When the ranks were thinned out in the latter half of 2023, Dallas signed him out of the league and brought him back this summer. He has never worked with Zimmer and is most likely in the LB5 or LB6 range, so he could be in danger if any of the kids behind him show up.

Markquese Bell and DeMarvion Overshown are two of the Cowboys’ young linebacker prospects. Keeping a rotational veteran like Wilson is not as appealing as giving fresh talent like that pair a chance.
