BREAKING news: Tua Tagovailoa signs four-year contract extension with Miami Dolphins

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement to extend his deal, which would bring his annual salary to $53.1 million on average.

After expressing their desire to finalize a contract extension with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins and their 2020 first-round selection have reached an agreement on a four-year, $212.4 million deal, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Dolphins finally acquired the quarterback they had been waiting for for two years when Tagovailoa was chosen with the fifth overall choice in the 2020 NFL Draft. Despite battling injuries during his first four seasons, he quickly assumed the primary quarterback position for the team. After leading the league in passing yards in his debut season of participating in every game last year, Tagovailoa was chosen for his first Pro Bowl selection.

In 2022, he had the highest passing rating and yards per attempt in the league. In the two seasons that Miami has had Mike McDaniel as its head coach, he has a passer rating that is higher than 100.

In the previous campaign, Tagovailoa completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 4,624 yards, with 29 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and a passer rating of 101.1. He set career highs in yardage, completion %, and touchdowns.

The Dolphins and Tagovailoa had been at a standstill over a new contract, and the current agreement puts an end to that developing narrative. In the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, Tagovailoa was scheduled to play in 2024, with the possibility of the team franchise tagging him before he hits free agency in 2025. He will now stay with the team, and for the ensuing years, it is anticipated that he will keep developing as a player and help the team.

The Dolphins’ front office can now focus on extending safety Jevon Holland, who is expected to be a free agent this year, and renegotiating wide out Tyreek Hill’s contract after acquiring Tagovailoa.
