Sky Sports commentator Miles Maclagan reacts when asked who he believes is superior between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

It’s truly impressive how Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have evolved from relative unknowns with quietly good futures into two of tennis’ top players.

Given their various skills, there will undoubtedly be many more. Already acknowledged as the team poised to fill the vacuum left by the Big Three’s departure, they have already engaged in some legendary bouts.

Right now, there is a ton of parity between them, with two Grand Slams apiece in 2024.

But when they play in the China Open final later today, that might all be resolved.

Debate between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner resurfaced

Pundit Miles Maclagan attempted to weigh in on the most hotly debated topic in tennis just before Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz square off in the China Open final, during his appearance on Sky Sports yesterday.

When asked which of the two he thought was superior, the former Andy Murray coach conceded: “You talk about the differences between him (Alcaraz) and Sinner and you say that Sinner might be more reliable overall, but Alcaraz might be better at his best level overall.”

He has exceptional athleticism, a first-rate mindset, and almost always makes the right shot choice. Sometimes you wonder if he’s enjoying himself a little, but you also question whether that’s allowed in his game.

The top players pick things up really quickly, so although Alcaraz may miss a few days here or there, he is improving in that area currently.

“We are talking at the highest level, and after winning Roland Garros and then defending his Wimbledon title over the course of the summer, he is growing accustomed to competing at the very, very, very highest level over time.”

A first peek at Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s China Open final

For the second time this year and for the ninth time in their careers, two of the brightest young tennis prospects will take to the court today.

People swarm to witness the spectacle every time they duel, and as the two have developed into some of the greatest players in the world, curiosity around them has only grown.

Few players are as merciless and relentless from the back of the court as Sinner, who is known for his extraordinary ball striking.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, is a trickster. Although he can also deliver powerful strikes from a distance, his ability to switch things up has allowed him to win their last two encounters.

The Spaniard, who has a slim 5-4 record, will be feeling well going into his first-ever ATP final in Asia, but Sinner has already stated what he expects from Alcaraz when they play in the China Open final later today.

For the first time this season, both players ought to be totally fit before facing off in a match.
