Last weekend, John took part in the Springfield Senior Cycling Marathon, completing an astonishing 50 miles in just under three hours. His energy, endurance, and unshakable positivity earned him a standing ovation as he crossed the finish line. But what truly captivated the audience were his heartfelt words: “Life doesn’t slow down unless you let it. If I can start at 65, imagine what you can do.”

John’s cycling journey began somewhat accidentally. After retiring at 65, he realized he needed a hobby to stay active. A neighbor lent him an old bicycle, and John decided to give it a try. Those early days were anything but smooth—he fell, struggled with balance, and often felt out of breath. But John’s determination never wavered.

I remember thinking, ‘If I can make it around the block today, maybe tomorrow I’ll make it to the park,’” he recalls. I took it one ride at a time, and before I knew it, I was hooked.”

Over the years, John upgraded his gear, joined local cycling clubs, and participated in community races. By his 75th birthday, he had completed his first century ride—100 miles in a single day. At 85, he cycled across three states with a team of fellow enthusiasts. And now, at 90, he’s still going strong.

When asked about the key to his incredible vitality, John humbly shares four principles that he believes have kept him healthy, happy, and motivated:

  2. Prioritize Daily Movement While cycling is his main passion, John incorporates other forms of exercise, like yoga and strength training, into his routine. “Your body is designed to move,” he says. “Even on rest days, I make sure to take a walk or stretch.”
  3. Build a Supportive Community John credits much of his success to the cycling community. “When you surround yourself with positive, like-minded people, they’ll push you to be better,” he explains. His cycling club, made up of riders of all ages, has become like a second family.
  4. Nourish Your Body and Mind A self-proclaimed foodie, John is passionate about eating well. He focuses on whole foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and staying hydrated. But he’s also quick to point out the importance of mental health. “I meditate, laugh often, and focus on gratitude. A happy mind makes a strong body.”

John’s story has inspired countless others to pursue their own late-in-life passions. From 70-year-olds picking up their first tennis racket to 80-year-olds trying yoga, his journey proves it’s never too late to start something new.

“I’ve received letters from people all over the world,” he says with a smile. “One man told me he hadn’t ridden a bike in 40 years, but after reading about me, he decided to try again. That’s the best reward I could ask for.”

Not one to rest on his laurels, John is already planning his next adventure. He’s training for a 75-mile ride this spring and considering a cross-country cycling trip to celebrate his 91st birthday.

“The road ahead is full of possibilities,” he says. “I may not be the fastest rider out there, but I’m proof that passion and persistence can take you anywhere.”
