LeBron James of the Lakers Delivers a Powerful Message Regarding Dalton Knecht

The Los Angeles Lakers have been relatively quiet in the trade market and free agency, making rookie first-round pick Dalton Knecht their most significant offseason addition.

Knecht, a 23-year-old guard from Tennessee, could make an immediate impact due to his maturity.

LeBron James is particularly enthusiastic about Knecht, praising him highly. During a press conference on July 6, James said, “Throughout the college season, besides Bronny (James), Dalton was my favorite player. I watched him all season and admired his shooting, athleticism, height, and demeanor. I always believed his game would translate well to the NBA. I didn’t expect him to fall to 17, so I’m thrilled we got him.”

James’s comments are notable, especially since, at 39, he may not have many seasons left to play with Knecht. However, he clearly believes Knecht can make an immediate impact. If Knecht secures a spot in the Lakers’ rotation, it would compensate for an otherwise quiet offseason in terms of veteran additions.

Many analysts anticipated Knecht to be a top-10 draft pick this year, with The Ringer projecting him at No. 8 and ESPN at No. 6. Thus, the Lakers selecting him at No. 17 could prove to be a significant steal. General manager and vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka has explained why he believes Knecht will be a good fit for the team.

Despite high expectations, Knecht has had a slow start in the NBA Summer League, shooting 2-for-15 on jumpers and scoring 24 combined points in two games. Fortunately, the Summer League allows rookies to adjust and become more comfortable with their new teams. Though he hasn’t impressed yet, there are many games left. If he continues to struggle, the Lakers may need to ease him onto the court gradually once the regular season begins.
