Insider speculates as to whether quarterback Dak Prescott will depart the Cowboys in 2025

The future of quarterback Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys is uncertain as he approaches the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract. ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano highlighted in his recent column that no agreement has been reached between Prescott and the Cowboys. Graziano suggested that it wouldn’t be surprising if the 30-year-old quarterback plays for another team in 2025.

“I think it would be a massive mistake to rule out this possibility,” Graziano wrote. He emphasized that there would undoubtedly be a strong market for Prescott, who led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes in 2023, if he becomes available. By then, Prescott and his agent would have a clear idea of interested teams and their offers. Although the Cowboys want to avoid this scenario, it’s not entirely within their control.

Prescott holds significant leverage in contract negotiations. His current deal includes a no-trade and no-tag clause, and he carries a $55.45 million cap hit in 2024. If the Cowboys don’t re-sign him before the start of the 2025 league year, it would result in a substantial $40.46 million dead cap charge.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, during a Tuesday episode of “The Insiders,” mentioned that a new deal for Prescott could be worth $60 million annually, potentially making him the highest-paid player in the league. The Cowboys might view this as an overpayment, given that Prescott has yet to lead the team to an NFC Championship Game.

Despite not having a new deal in place, Prescott assured that he wouldn’t miss the start of training camp on July 25. “Day one of training camp, my mind flips to just helping my team and doing everything I can within the organization and on the football field to make sure that I am my best and everyone around me is their best,” Prescott told The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “The money and all of that will take care of itself as it always does.”

While Prescott’s future in Dallas remains uncertain, his performance in the upcoming season could be a deciding factor. If the three-time Pro Bowler can lead the Cowboys to a championship, he would likely secure a significant payday. ESPN’s Football Power Index currently gives the Cowboys the fourth-best chance (8.7%) to win Super Bowl LIX.
