Dolphins working out former Super Bowl champion after Shaq Barrett retirement

The Dolphins have three pass rushers on the physically unable to perform list. Losing Shaq Barrett has reduced their depth significantly, forcing them to consider all options.

Following Shaq Barrett’s unexpected retirement ahead of the Miami Dolphins training camp, the team is making moves to identify his replacement. According to sources, former Super Bowl winner Emmanuel Ogbah will work out for the team, potentially filling the much-needed pass-rushing gap left by Barrett’s retirement.

Already familiar with Miami, Ogbah was productive in limited opportunities with the Dolphins last season, recording 5.0 sacks and an interception in 238 defensive snaps. Ogbah was released in February to free up salary budget space, but if his workout goes well, he might return to Miami for a fifth consecutive season.

If it occurs, it may be a blessing in disguise for the Dolphins. Miami previously placed Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Cameron Goode on the physically unable to perform list last week, and Barrett’s departure has left them low on the defensive edges. Signing Ogbah would provide the Dolphins with an experienced presence to complement rookies Chop Robinson and Mohamed Kamara, potentially salvaging their pass rush following Barrett’s decision.

Can Emmanuel Ogbah provide the Dolphins with a pass-rushing option?
Last season, Ogbah’s playing time was dramatically reduced in 2023 as he struggled to break out in a 3-4 scheme established by new Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Like the majority of Miami’s defensive players, Ogbah was dissatisfied with his place in Fangio’s scheme. But, with Fangio gone to Philadelphia and Anthony Weaver leading the defense in South Beach, Ogbah may have an opportunity to flourish.

Granted, Ogbah may not have another 10-sack season in him, but the free-agent veteran pass rusher can still contribute to the right team. However, this would not be his first time stepping up for the Dolphins. Despite Fangio’s problems, when Phillips and Chubb were injured, Ogbah stepped up and helped drive a Miami defense that finished in the top ten in terms of passing touchdowns allowed.

Ogbah’s NFL career has been defined by his ability to step up when his team needs him the most. Under Weaver, Ogbah has the opportunity to repeat his performance for Miami from last season. But, now that Fangio is out of the picture, he’ll be able to enjoy himself. Given the circumstances and how late it is in the offseason, Ogbah would be an excellent choice to replace Barrett and potentially propel the Dolphins to the top of the AFC East.
