Stephen A. Smith says Dak Prescott ‘doesn’t deserve’ big contract extension

Stephen A. Smith rarely remains silent on a significant contract dispute involving big sports league players. Therefore, it came as no surprise when he offered his thoughts on Monday on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys’ ongoing contract negotiations—or lack thereof.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter on Sunday, via Bleacher Report, Prescott is scheduled to become a free agency in the spring of 2016 and is probably waiting for other prominent quarterbacks in the league to sign contracts before he can cash in big time.

Given how Prescott has fared in the playoffs throughout his career, Smith believes that the veteran play-caller is not worth the high price tag, despite what Cowboys fans may believe.

Smith remarked, “I’m just saying he doesn’t deserve it,” on ESPN First Take on Monday.

“I understand that your value is determined by the market, as we frequently discuss it.He doesn’t participate in the postseason, so he doesn’t deserve it.”

According to StatMuse, Prescott, who turns 31 on July 29, has only triumphed twice in seven postseason games since 2017. During the time that he has a 64.5% completion percentage and a 14–7 TD–INT ratio, the Cowboys have not advanced past the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

“If you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan, are you excited about retaining Dak Prescott?” Smith inquired.

Smith’s remarks come in response to Dallas Morning News reporter Calvin Watkins’s claims that the Cowboys are giving contract extension negotiations with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who will also be a free agent in 2025, top priority.

Wednesday, July 24, is the first day of training camp for the Cowboys. On August 11, they will play their first preseason game in Los Angeles against the Rams.
