The 21-year-old defeated Wu Yibing in straight sets on Sunday in Shanghai to record his 50th victory of 2024.
Carlos Alcaraz shone under the lights at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday night, battling past China’s Wu Yibing in the third round of the Masters 1000 event, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The victory extended his fall winning streak to 11 matches in a row—since his surprise exit to Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open, he’s won two Davis Cup matches, two Laver Cup matches, five en route to the title in Beijing and now his first two in Shanghai.
His victory on Sunday was also his 50th win of the year.
There’s more: he’s now won 50 or more matches in each of the last three years, having won 57 in 2022 and 65 in 2023.
And there’s even more: Alcaraz is actually the only man to win 50 or more matches in each of the last three years.
Two other men, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, can potentially join the Spaniard in that stat, as they’re the only two other men to have won 50 or more matches in both 2022 and 2023—as of now they have 39 and 38 wins in 2024, respectively.
Only one woman has won 50 or more matches in each of the last three years: Iga Swiatek. She won 67 in 2022 and 68 in 2023 and is at 59 so far in 2024. No other woman can join her in that stat, as she was the only one to surpass the 50-win threshold in 2022.
ALCARAZ WIN-LOSS RECORDS BY YEAR (tour-level):
2020: 1-1
2021: 32-17
2022: 57-13
2023: 65-12
2024: 50-9
That wasn’t the only milestone Alcaraz reached on Sunday night—his victory over Wu was also the 100th hard-court win of his career.
He’s the third man born in the 2000s to reach that milestone, and the first man born in 2003 or later—or even 2002 or later—to do it.
MEN BORN IN 2000s WITH 100+ HARD-COURT WINS (tour-level):
176: Jannik Sinner [born in 2001]
142: Felix Auger-Aliassime [born in 2000]
100: Carlos Alcaraz [born in 2003]
Awaiting the No. 3-seeded Alcaraz in the fourth round in Shanghai will be the winner of the all-French battle between No. 16 seed Ugo Humbert and Gael Monfils, which is scheduled for Monday.
