The alarming “hero ball” explanation for the Cowboys’ terrible defense

The 2024 NFL season is off to a 1-2 start for the Dallas Cowboys. Their defense has been worrisome through three games. Although the team of new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is suffering with some ailments, they shouldn’t be this severe.

They fell against the Baltimore Ravens 28–25, giving up touchdowns on four of Baltimore’s first six drives after letting the New Orleans Saints score 44 points. Both defeats occurred at home. Dallas is one of six teams to allow at least 6.0 yards per play, has given up a league-worst eight running touchdowns, and has only three takeaways. They have also given up 5.4 yards per rush attempt.

Why is that? According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, defensive lineman Linval Joseph of the Cowboys stated that “everyone’s trying to play hero ball.”

You know, it’s just the way it is. You’re not winning. According to Joseph, per ESPN, “You want to be the guy that makes that big play.” That’s not the kind of football we need right now, then. We need men who will perform their one-hundredth and work duties.

To start the 2024 NFL season, the Cowboys have one of the worst defenses.
Among the Cowboys’ many capable heroes are their defensive linemen, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, and DeMarcus Lawrence. But problems have gotten worse because of how quickly games may go from behind to ahead.
