Andy Roddick Shuts Down Carlos Alcaraz’s Schedule Complaints After Off-Season Exhibitions: ‘I Don’t Want to Hear About It’
In a bold and direct response to rising star Carlos Alcaraz’s recent complaints about his off-season schedule, tennis legend Andy Roddick has firmly shut down the young Spaniard’s grievances. Alcaraz, who has quickly become one of the sport’s most dominant forces, expressed frustration over the increasing demands of exhibition matches during the off-season, with a packed calendar leaving little time for proper rest.
However, Roddick—himself a former world No. 1—was unsympathetic. In a recent interview, Roddick made his stance clear: “I don’t want to hear about it,” he said. “We were playing three, four, five months a year. When we got the chance to make a little money and have fun, we took it. It’s part of the job.”
While Alcaraz’s frustration stems from a seemingly unrelenting schedule, Roddick, who retired from professional tennis in 2012, emphasized that athletes in today’s game are living in a different era with more opportunities. “It’s a grind, sure, but that’s the life of a top player. I had to fight for what I got. Now, these guys are earning millions, playing in front of packed stadiums—it’s a different world,” Roddick pointed out.
Despite his somewhat tough-love response, Roddick admitted that maintaining balance is essential, advising that players should manage their schedules wisely to avoid burnout. However, he remained firm in his view that top-tier players like Alcaraz have to make the most of their opportunities.
Alcaraz, who has become a favorite among fans worldwide, recently said that the endless exhibition commitments, while lucrative, could interfere with his physical recovery. However, the words from a seasoned veteran like Roddick will likely give the young star some perspective. As the tennis world watches, it seems clear: the off-season may be as much about mental toughness as it is about rest.
