In a significant development for the cycling world, Mathieu van der Poel, the reigning world champion and one of the sport’s most versatile talents, has extended his contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck until the end of 2028. This extension solidifies his commitment to the team, with which he has been associated since 2011, marking an 18-year partnership by the conclusion of this new agreement.
Van der Poel, 29, has been a cornerstone of Alpecin-Deceuninck’s success across multiple disciplines, including road cycling, cyclo-cross, and mountain biking. His impressive palmarès boasts victories in prestigious races such as two Tours of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Milan-San Remo, and multiple world championships in cyclo-cross.
Expressing his satisfaction with the renewed commitment, Van der Poel stated, “This extension is a logical choice for me. I have felt particularly comfortable in the structures of Philip and Christoph Roodhooft from the beginning. I have grown together with the team and I still feel that we are making progress.” He further emphasized the team’s multidisciplinary approach, noting, “Alpecin-Deceuninck is also multi-disciplinary. This is the perfect team to continue to combine road, mountain bike, and cyclo-cross.”
Team managers Philip and Christoph Roodhooft expressed their delight at the contract extension, highlighting the long-term vision they have shared with Van der Poel. “We had a long-term plan with him from the beginning. The multidisciplinary vision was an important aspect of this. We quickly found each other in that as well. Over the years, we have proven that our structure and vision work,” they commented. They also acknowledged Van der Poel’s significant role in the team’s continued hunger for success across both men’s and women’s squads.
In conjunction with his team contract, Van der Poel has also secured a 10-year agreement as an ambassador for Canyon, the team’s bike sponsor. This deal ensures that he will continue to ride Canyon bicycles throughout his tenure with Alpecin-Deceuninck and represent the brand beyond his active racing career.
