Breaking News: Kindness Triumphs as Vernon Volleyball Event Raises Record $3,000 for a Great Cause

VERNON, Jan. 2, 2025 – In a heartwarming display of community spirit and athletic prowess, the annual Vernon Volleyball Fundraiser shattered all previous records by raising an impressive $3,000 for a local cause. The event, held at the Vernon Community Center, attracted hundreds of participants and spectators, underscoring the power of collective goodwill and teamwork.

The fundraiser, now in its fifth year, supports the Vernon Youth Support Initiative (VYSI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing mentorship, scholarships, and resources for underprivileged youth in the area. This year’s event exceeded its $2,500 goal, with every dollar going directly toward expanding VYSI’s programs.

What started as a small gathering of volleyball enthusiasts has grown into a staple event on Vernon’s community calendar. This year, the tournament boasted 16 teams from across the region, ranging from amateur players to seasoned athletes. Friendly competition filled the air as players spiked, set, and served their way through an action-packed day.

“It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come,” said event organizer and VYSI founder, Kelly Mendez. “The support from the community, local businesses, and volunteers has been overwhelming. It’s proof that when people come together for a common cause, incredible things can happen.”

The day’s events kicked off with an energetic opening ceremony featuring local high school cheerleaders and a moving speech by 17-year-old Jasmine Carter, a VYSI beneficiary. Jasmine shared how the organization’s mentorship program helped her secure a college scholarship and achieve her dreams of becoming a social worker.

“Without VYSI, I wouldn’t be standing here today,” Jasmine told the crowd. “This organization gave me hope when I felt like giving up. I’m so grateful to everyone who’s contributed to making this possible.”

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed family-friendly activities, including a kids’ volleyball clinic, face painting, and a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses. The most coveted raffle item, a signed volleyball from Team USA’s Olympic athletes, drew significant excitement and ticket sales.

The success of this year’s event was bolstered by a wide array of sponsors, including Vernon’s own Smith’s Grocery, which provided food and beverages, and Sunny’s Sporting Goods, which donated equipment for the tournament. Local bands provided live music, creating a festive atmosphere that kept spirits high despite the brisk January weather.

“We’re incredibly proud to support such a meaningful cause,” said Alex Grant, owner of Smith’s Grocery. “Events like this remind us of the strength of our community and the importance of giving back.”

With this year’s record-breaking success, plans are already underway for the 2026 Vernon Volleyball Fundraiser. Organizers are exploring ways to make the event even bigger and better, with aspirations to include regional tournaments and expand the beneficiary list.

As the sun set on this year’s event, the message was clear: kindness and unity remain powerful forces for change. Thanks to the Vernon community’s generosity, countless young lives will be positively impacted, proving once again that a little teamwork can go a long way.

Stay tuned for updates on next year’s event and other initiatives supporting VYSI. For those who missed the opportunity to participate, donations are still being accepted through the organization’s website.
