A Tough Ride: J.B. Mauney Reflects on Retirement After a Grueling Year
Legendary Professional Bull Rider (PBR) J.B. Mauney has officially called it quits after a tumultuous 2023 season. Once celebrated as one of the most dominant figures in the sport, Mauney’s retirement comes as no surprise to those who followed his grueling journey through injury and recovery. The 36-year-old icon admitted he was “100% ready” to hang up his spurs after a career-defining setback: a serious neck injury that required surgery and a prolonged, challenging recovery.
Mauney, known for his fearless approach and unwavering determination, has faced countless injuries throughout his illustrious career. However, the neck injury he sustained in early 2023 was different. During a routine ride in a PBR event, Mauney was thrown violently from a bull, landing awkwardly on his neck. The impact left him with severe pain and limited mobility, necessitating immediate medical attention.
Following the accident, Mauney underwent neck surgery to address the damage. The procedure marked one of the most significant medical interventions of his career. While the surgery was deemed successful, the recovery process was far from smooth. Months of physical therapy and rehabilitation tested Mauney’s resolve, and for the first time, he began to question his future in the sport.
In a candid interview, Mauney reflected on the mental and physical toll of his recovery. “I’ve always been the kind of guy who pushes through pain,” he said. “But this was different. It wasn’t just about getting back on a bull. It was about being able to live my life without constant pain.”
Despite his best efforts, Mauney acknowledged that his body was no longer able to withstand the demands of professional bull riding. “I’ve had a hell of a ride, but there comes a point where you have to listen to your body,” he admitted. “And my body was telling me it was time to stop.”
Mauney’s retirement marks the end of an era for PBR. Over his career, he amassed numerous accolades, including two PBR World Championships and 33 career wins on the elite Unleash the Beast tour. His name became synonymous with grit, determination, and a willingness to take on the rankest bulls in the sport.
Fans and fellow riders alike have expressed their admiration for Mauney’s contributions to bull riding. “J.B. is a legend,” said fellow rider and friend Chase Outlaw. “He’s inspired so many of us to push harder and dream bigger. He’ll always be a part of this sport, even if he’s not riding anymore.”
Although Mauney is stepping away from competitive bull riding, he’s not leaving the sport entirely. He has hinted at plans to stay involved in the industry, possibly as a mentor or coach for up-and-coming riders. “I’ve learned a lot over the years, and I’d love to pass that knowledge on to the next generation,” he said.
For now, Mauney is focusing on his recovery and spending time with his family. “This isn’t the end for me,” he assured fans. “It’s just a new chapter.”
J.B. Mauney’s retirement is a bittersweet moment for the world of professional bull riding. While his absence will undoubtedly leave a void in the sport, his legacy will endure as a testament to the resilience and passion that define the PBR. As Mauney himself put it, “It’s been one hell of a ride, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
